Mission Statement

The American Wedding Project has one primary mission: to create a platform of communication between people of various cultures of living within the United States about one subject matter in which they all participate in – weddings.

“People fail to get along because they fear each other;

they fear each other because they don’t

know each other; they don’t know each

other because they have

not communicated with each other. ”

~ Martin Luther King, Jr.

This projects purpose is to tell the stories behind why we do the things we do within the context of a wedding. What is the purpose of henna? Why are wedding dresses bright red in some traditionsand white in others? Why do some couples jump a broom? It will also explore how some communities work together to celebrate their children’s choice to get married in a social environment that doesn’t seem to promote the idea of life long commitment.

The wedding industry is fascinating, and it creates a 300-BILLION-dollar worldwide market, including 55 billion in the US. It has created 500,000 businesses and employs over 750,000 people. Most of these businesses are small businesses or cottage industries; they are part of the heartbeat of America. Every year in America 2.3 million couples get married; this means that more than 410 million people are involved with a wedding in one way or another every year! They represent all different ethnic and social cultures, different economic levels…and they all still believe in and celebrate the union between two people.

To build the knowledge for this project, I intend to travel as a journalist to document a wedding in every state over the next year and a half. And I aim to do the entire tour on a motor scooter!

Please check the

website for the week that I might be in your state! If you know of a wedding that would fit the criteria of this project please contact me!

Come along for the journey: sign up for a weekly newsletter which will give you a listing of all the blog posts, pod casts, and videos posted, or become a follower of this blog!

See you on the road!
